To ensure your computer stays up to date and runs smoothly, it’s a good idea to restart it every night. This practice helps avoid issues where updates can’t be installed because they need the computer to restart. We don’t automatically restart your computer, this is to prevent loss of any unsaved work you may have.

Even if your computer has not received the most recent Windows Updates, or if it requires a reboot to complete pending updates, including some critical updates we may have recently notified you about, your system has been enhanced with additional security features by us as a part of our maintenance program to protect you in the event you are missing updates.

These extra safeguards, along with our approach of employing multiple layers of security, protect your computer and network against potential threats often even with some missing, stuck, or pending Windows Updates. This strategy of multi-layered protection ensures that your computer remains secure, even if there are problems receiving and installing updates. Keep in mind that restarting your computer can frequently fix issues related to updates.

You also have the option to manually check for and install Windows updates whenever you want, which might be faster than waiting for automatic updates. See the section “General Audience” for instructions on how to manually run updates.
